In November 1973, a US Navy Douglas Super DC-3 ran out of fuel and crash-landed on the frozen river plain at Sólheimasandur on Iceland's south coast. The crew survived. The aircraft was never removed. We woke well before sunrise and walked forty minutes along a flat gravel road to reach it before other visitors arrived, arriving just as the first light came over the horizon.
The wreck sits on a vast black sand plain between the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the sea — no trees, no structures, nothing to give it scale except the sky. The fuselage has been stripped of most of its markings over the decades, but the shape is still unmistakably an aircraft, incongruous and permanent in equal measure. In the early morning light, the metal catches colour that the midday sun flattens out.
