After what I'd describe as the muddiest, most demanding hike I've done, the Ko'olau mountain range opened up into this. In the valley below, a highway caught a narrow band of light — the only brightness in a landscape that was otherwise deep green and overcast.
The Ko'olau Range forms the eastern spine of Oahu, the eroded remnant of the island's older shield volcano. The windward side receives heavy rainfall, which is why the valleys are so intensely green and the trails so difficult. From the ridge, the scale of the range is hard to take in — the peaks rise steeply, the valleys drop away, and the highway below looks like something drawn with a ruler. The sliver of light on the road was brief, and the image is really about that: the contrast between the dark, wet landscape and the one bright line running through it.
