During the January 2018 blizzard that paralyzed much of the eastern seaboard, I was at the corner of 8th Avenue and West 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan. Most of the city had gone quiet. The yellow cab in this frame was one of the few things still moving.
The yellow of the cab against the white and grey of the storm is the image's engine — that particular New York yellow, unmistakable even through the snow. West 57th Street is one of the city's major crosstown corridors, and the intersection with 8th Avenue sits at the edge of Hell's Kitchen, a few blocks from Central Park. In a blizzard, the familiar geometry of the grid becomes something stranger: the lines softer, the distances harder to read, the city briefly uncertain of itself.

Richard Lam is a Vancouver-based photographer and filmmaker whose work captures the quiet beauty of fleeting moments. With over a decade behind the camera, his photography is rooted in a deep sense of curiosity, presence, and human connection.
What began as a personal practice—documenting everyday moments to hold onto how they felt—quickly evolved into a creative calling. Richard eventually left a corporate career to pursue storytelling full-time, combining his marketing background with a thoughtful, visual approach to narrative.
His prints are the result of years spent traveling, observing, and refining his craft. Each image is a reflection of Richard’s belief that photography has the power to slow us down, help us see more clearly, and connect us to something greater than ourselves.
