In 1973, a US Navy aircraft crash-landed on a frozen river at Sólheimasandur. Nearly fifty years later, the unsalvaged remains of the aircraft remain at the scene in southern Iceland. To reach this spot without tourists, we woke up well before sunrise. After a forty-minute walk along a flat, gravel road, we finally arrived just as the sunlight started to peek over the horizon.
